Faith meets football — daily inspiration

Playing for the Higher Goal
Colossians 3:23

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.

Devotional

In the busyness of our daily lives—whether on the pitch, at the office, or at home—it is easy to lose sight of who we are truly serving. We often get caught up in the opinions of coaches, the expectations of parents, or the pressure to perform for personal accolades. However, Scripture reminds us that our primary audience is God Himself. When we shift our focus from human approval to divine purpose, our perspective on success completely transforms. Faith is not just something we bring to church; it is the heartbeat of everything we do, including how we compete on the field. When we realize our effort is an act of worship, every practice and game becomes an opportunity to honor the One who gave us our abilities. This mindset fosters excellence, not for the sake of pride, but as a reflection of our gratitude to the Creator.

Football Connection

On the football pitch, it is tempting to play only when the cameras are on or the coach is watching. Yet, the best players are those who maintain the same intensity during the final minute of a blowout match as they do in the opening seconds of a championship game. Much like a player who runs to the corner flag to retrieve the ball for a quick throw-in rather than waiting, our service to God should be proactive and relentless. It means maintaining our integrity when the referee isn't looking and encouraging a teammate who is struggling, even when no one is cheering for us to do so.

Reflection Questions

Does my level of effort change based on who is watching me play or work? How would my attitude toward training change if I viewed it as an act of worship? In what specific way can I serve my teammates today to honor God?

Take a moment to think

  • 1.What stood out to you?
  • 2.What might this mean for your life this week?
  • 3.Is there someone you would like to talk to about this?
  • 4.What is one thing you want to remember?

You can talk these questions through with Roger, another Onside leader, or an adult you trust. If you prefer, write your thoughts in your own notebook or Onside workbook. Nothing you think or write is collected by this website.

Talk to somebody

You can speak to Roger, an Onside leader or another adult you trust. If something is worrying you, you feel unsafe, or you think somebody may be in danger, tell a trusted adult. If somebody is in immediate danger, call 999.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of this day and the ability to play and compete. Help me to remember that my identity is found in You alone. As I head out to the pitch, I ask that You would fill me with Your joy and a spirit of excellence. May my actions, my attitude, and my sportsmanship be a pleasing offering to You. Let me play with a heart that seeks Your glory above all else. Amen.
